Municipal infrastructure. For some there is nothing more exciting than talking about it. (I won’t name names, but you know who you are!) But beneath the surface of roads and parks, you can learn a lot about the mindset of a community in how they design their physical space. While in Avignon, France over the summer, I came across this – a tree growing out of the concrete, alive and thriving right in the middle of a bus route. I don’t know what the process was (or whether there was one) in opting not to unearth the tree for the sake of a traffic route, but the reality is that it is there. And what a statement it makes.
